TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 28, 2010) - Golf Town has provided a donation of $150,000 to Toronto General Hospital at University Health Network (UHN) to support a new treatment approach for prostate cancer.

The donation continues a multi-year commitment from Golf Town to 'chip in to fight a killer'.

The monies will be used to secure critical technology necessary for clinical researchers to expand their capabilities and gain greater speed and accuracy in their investigations of prostate cancer.

Golf Town's donation will secure the crucial HDXT Operating System for its MRI scanner. This will enable UHN's clinical researchers to perform many innovative procedures currently not possible in the existing MRI Treatment Suite.

"Golf Town stands by our commitment to give back to the community at large through the support of programs that enhance the wellness of Canadians. It gives us tremendous pride to be able to assist in the fight against prostate cancer - a cause that we have been backing for several years and with considerable success - with a gift that we hope will advance the treatment of this disease," said Stephen Bebis, Golf Town President and CEO.

A new form of treatment, known as MRI-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MRgFUS), is being investigated through a series of clinical trials led by Dr. John Trachtenberg, Director, The Prostate Centre at Princess Margaret Hospital and the Fleck Tanenbaum Chair of Prostatic Disease, and Dr. Walter Kucharczyk, Director of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Department of Medical Imaging at University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital.

Initially developed as a therapy for early state low grade prostate cancer, MRgFUS destroys cancer cells by heating them with highly focused ultrasonic beams.

The method, developed at UHN jointly with their industrial collaborators, can accurately target and treat lesions while obtaining real time temperature measurements of the cancerous lesion and adjacent tissue.

This transformative concept represents a significant change to the current treatment of prostate cancer as it offers a new treatment option with far fewer potential side effects.

"This type of MRI technology is today's single best resource to localize and treat small cancer lesions, we can change the way we treat prostate disease effectively while ensuring that patients have fewer side effects and a better quality of life," says Dr. Trachtenberg.

"The gift from Golf Town will enable us to get the critical tools we need in order to continue the development of this new treatment approach."
