Page 1 of 2 ![]() The Original Pro Shop Was Renovated In 1995-96 And Adds To The Charm Of Rodd Mill River GC by Gayle Moss (www.golfgal.ca) Inside Golf's "GolfGal" Gayle Moss took her love for the game and her keen reporting skills on a journey to Canada's beautiful Prince Edward Island, known as the 'Gentle Island', to learn more about this burgeoning golf destination as well as to get the goods on just what went on during the filming of The Golf Channel's "Big Break PEI". We now present the conclusion of Gayle's Excellent Adventure at the Rodd Mill River Course and her encounter with Big Break PEI. GolfGal Gayle Breaks For Home At the turn, you’ll find the original pro shop for the 1st 13 years the course was open. When the resort was built, the house was deserted for a number of years and then they renovated it in 1995/96 to create a canteen and members area. It’s a nice surprise to have such a lovely facility in the middle of the course, especially since the 9th hole doesn’t end back at the clubhouse like most courses. The 10th hole should be very familiar to Big Break PEI fans – recognize the tree? ![]() The 10th Hole At Rodd Mill River...Watch Out For That Tree... - Episode 1: The “closest to the pin” challenges from the bunker and rough, and sadly home to Robert’s elimination. (But remember his amazing shot over the trees from the other green? Mark pointed out where Robert’s ball was for me and I still can’t believe it. It looked like an impossible shot.) - Episode 3: The 2nd immunity challenge where they had to drive into the grid. Gerina bombed it and won. No surprise there! - Episode 5: Another great shot from Gerina – 290 yards in the cold to make it to the green in just 2 shots. Even Charlie was impressed by that. - Episode 5: Where Derek was on the cart path, got a drop and holed it (much to Brian’s chagrin). - Episode 9: Where Derek and Gerina lost their immunity challenges to Blair and Brenda and had to head off to elimination. The 11th hole is called Easy Pickins for a reason. A 188 yard par 3, it was the hole where Football hit his ball to the right, just off the green and assumed it was just a “chip and a putt”. ![]() The 11th Hole, A 188-Yard Par 3 Is Called 'Easy Pickins. Turns Out It Wasn't Easy Pickins For Everybody In Big Break PEI But I guess Football didn’t really give it the respect it was due. Mark knew it was a difficult shot and he said he could have bet money that Football would do exactly what he did – hit it way beyond the pin and then 3-putt from there. Too bad – I would have liked to have seen more of Football on the Big Break. Actually, I could say the same about Robert. Between the two of them, it sounds like they kept the staff at Mill River in stitches! The 13th hole is the 529 yard par 5 that Brian chose in his elimination challenge against Aaron in Episode 6. 'Aqua Bound' is a dogleg left with water that definitely comes into play on your approach shot. The smart play is to use an iron off the tee and aim for the twin birches right of the bunker. Both Brian and Aaron had tee shots that didn’t hit the fairway – me thinks they used the wrong club – Aaron ended up way left and Brian was way right. ![]() The 14th Hole Called 'The Orchard' Although Pretty To Look At Can Cause Some Headaches Of Its Own Brian and Aaron didn’t have much choice given their tee shots and both were still in the fairway for their 3rd shots to the green. At least they didn’t get wet. The 14th is called 'The Orchard', but to Brian and Mark, it should be called, “I hate this hole” ;) Although it’s only ~210 to the water (~250 to carry) everything kicks right, so even if you get over the water, you’re left with an awkward lie with the ball well above your feet. In front of the water, the lies are flatter, which makes your approach shot much easier uphill to the green. So message to Brian and Aaron – Don’t use driver! I had to laugh when leaving the green on this hole. Mark said if they ever decide to redesign this hole, he wants first dibs on the bulldozer. Haha…I’m right behind you Mark! |
