Page 1 of 2 ![]() by Gayle Moss (www.golfgal.ca) When last we left our fearless reporter she had just returned from assignment in Seattle, Washington to gather important information on the upcoming Senior Men's U.S. Open at Sahalee Golf And Country Club in 2010. Lo and behold she now has a report on the most recent production of the Golf Channel's hit show the Big Break. The latest version, Big Break PEI, took place of course in Canada's beautiful Atlantic Province at the Rodd Mill River Golf Course. Today we present part one of Gayle's epic journey to perhpas one of the most unheralded but soon to be much better known great golf destinations in not only Canada but the world, Prince Edward Island. Gayle's Excellent Big Break Adventure - Part I For those of us who are Big Break addicts, we‟re facing a good news/bad news situation this month. Good news – on June 29th, we‟ll finally find out who wins the $100,000 cash after 11 weeks of exciting (and sometimes crazy) golf challenges and emotional eliminations. The bad news – no more Big Break PEI. But take heart all you golf guys and gals, because as Big Break PEI putts out at the end of June, the 2009 golf season on Prince Edward Island will be in full swing with over 30 great courses from which to choose, 10 of which are in Canada‟s top 100. And yes, it will be warmer than what you saw when Big Break PEI was filmed in late September 2008. July and August in PEI are known for great golf weather, with daytime temperatures in the 20‟s C (low-mid 70‟s F). Occasionally it can go as high as 32 degrees C (90 degrees F), but with low humidity you won‟t notice the heat. ![]() The Crew Of Big Break PEI Held At Rodd Mill River Resort I wanted to play Big Break PEI‟s Rodd Mill River golf course while the show was still airing so I could experience some of the challenges the contestants faced in the quest for their Big Break and the $100K as well as talk about those challenges in our weekly interviews. I also thought I might be able to get an inside scoop on the players and their Big Break playground from the Rodd team who hosted the 62 Golf Channel staff and the 12 contestants last Sepembert for 2 weeks. Yes, I went full of ulterior motives. ;) So my husband and I headed to Canada‟s #1 golf destination to check out Rodd Mill River and 2 other Rodd Signature Resorts: the popular 4 star Rodd Brudenell River (home to two of Atlantic Canada's finest golf courses - Brudenell River and Dundarave Golf Course) and the luxury 5 star, Rodd Crowbush Golf & Beach Resort (home to one of Canada‟s best golf courses, The Links at Crowbush). So let me take you on a golfing journey on PEI, starting with my Big Break experience at Rodd Mill River. And later this month, I‟ll share with you why Brudenell River/Dundarave and Crowbush are two premier golf destinations that you MUST add to the top of your bucket list. Walking In The Footsteps Of Big Breakers At Rodd Mill River Resort My husband and I arrived at Rodd Mill River Resort around midnight on June 9th after a very long 15 hours in the air and on the road, heading from one tip of Canada to the other (over 3,000 miles/almost 4,900 km). The Rodd Mill River folks went out of their way to make our arrival special, setting out a tasty cheese/fruit tray and a bottle of red wine in our room that really hit the spot after such a long journey cramped in coach. The next morning as we headed into the restaurant we saw the room where all the contestants enjoyed their daily breakfasts. We stopped to take a look. The first thing that came to mind was Episode 5 where the contestants had to pick up a ball as they walked into breakfast to determine their position in that day‟s immunity challenge. Rodd Mill River still has those balls displayed in the lobby of the hotel. I was tempted to snatch one as a souvenir, but I was trying to be on my best behaviour last week, so I put my hands in my pockets. |
