Victoria Times-Colonist political columnist Les Leyne is one of the most respected voices in the Victoria legislative press gallery, but what he's really passionate about is the sport of golf.

Leyne, who's part of a regular Saturday morning foursome at Cordova Bay in Victoria, gave a spirited talk at the 2013 Allied Golf Association of British Columbia State of the Game symposium at the University Golf Club where he predicted what the future of golf will look like come May 15.

The message was clear at the AGA-BC symposium at the University Golf Club on March 25: work smarter, provide better value and create your own brand.

As the golf industry tries to work its way through a world of declining rounds, declining yields and increased costs, it would seem there's little room for optimism.

But listen to speakers like Jim McLaughlin, Ian Robertson, Andy Hedley and Jim Lee, and you get the sense that there is room for growth and profits, provided you work smarter and roll with the times.

Wong and Byrne were joined by Ted Brown, Ryan Yip, James Love, Roger Sloan and Adam Cornelson, who all moved on following their respective qualifiers on Frday.

PGA Q-School Roundup - Canadians In First Stage

Tuesday marked the first round of stage one in the 2013 PGA Tour Q-School process. There are six first-stage events being contested this week with another eight on tap next week. 
 
A percentage of the survivors, usually in the range of 19 to 21 players from each site, advance to the second stage, which will be held from Nov. 13-17 at six sites.
 
The final stage of PGA TOUR qualifying will be contested over 108 holes and held Nov. 28-Dec. 3 on the TPC Stadium and Nicklaus Tournament courses at PGA West.
