![]() If You Love To Play As Much As Lisa Does, You'd Better Learn How To Do It In The Rain Being prepared to play in wet conditions will keep you and your equipment dry and allow you to play a full 18 without cursing Mother Nature or stoping after 9. 1. Have waterproof footwear with new spikes. After several seasons golf shoes deteriorate in their level of waterproof protection. A good pair of golf shoes every season or two is a solid investment. Also, check your spikes for dulled edges or missing cleats to optimize traction in wet grass. 2. Decent outerwear. Your outerwear needs to be waterproof not water resistant or solely wind proof. Otherwise, after 2 or 3 holes you'll be soaked to the bone and miserable. Staying dry is key to staying warm, not sticking to your clothes mid-swing and keeping a positive attitude which all lead to lower scores. 3. Wear 'Wet' Gloves. These are available at most Proshops and golf retailers. It is a pair of gloves designed to grip better when wet. John Wilson, Director of Golf at Heritage Pointe gave me the tip to soak the gloves as they work better wet and don’t bother removing your glove for putting. ![]() 4. Have a decent umbrella and a larger size. If you have an old school umbrella with the alternate red and white or green and white stripes circa 1970’s it may be time for a new one. It makes a great Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gift. Get one of the new tour style umbrellas that range from 62 – 68 ”. They offer greater coverage to keep you and your clubs dry and often sport specialized wind design and auto-open features. 5. Keep towels, gloves and grips dry. The best way to keep your towel dry is to hang it from the spokes of the umbrella. If it's only a light rain and you're not using wet gloves, hang a spare glove or two from the spokes as well to stay dry. While you are hitting your shot, stick the handle of the umbrella in your bag to keep the clubs covered and thus the grips dry. 6. Wear Headwear. Caps are good to keep the drizzle off your face but once it becomes a downpour you may need to switch to an ugly but effective bucket hat. Stay dry and go long!
