The Par 3 Fifth Hole Which Football Fumbled On With A Three-Putt
Now for some elevation – the par 3, 5th hole.  I took this picture from where Football and Brenda played their second tee shot in their elimination challenge.

They both teed off from about 160 yards, across a large pond.

The hole looks amazing from the tee, and it’s not a really long par 3.

But the winds off of Mill River can come into play on this hole, so you have to take enough club to carry the water when the wind decided to join you in your game.

According to Mark, Football didn’t hit too bad a shot to the back of the green, landing on the fringe. He should have won the hole with Brenda in the bunker, but his 3-putt killed him.

Actually, just an aside, that round bunker at the back where Brenda landed her tee shot was designed by Mark and the course superintendent. It is quite a bit higher than the green and it would have been almost impossible for Brenda to get up and down from there.

I was more impressed than ever that she escaped it as well as she did. And I was a tad more leery of Mark during the rest of our round knowing his propensity for cruel and unusual punishment for wayward tee shots ;)

The 5th hole was also used for the 2 circle pitch shots in Episode 7, where Gerina and Aaron went head to head in a playoff, with Aaron finally winning immunity.

The Sixth Hole Hosted The Elimination Challenge For Gerina And Blair In Episode Seven
It was also the hole Aaron called out Derek and sent him straight to elimination – something Derek wasn’t familiar with.

It set a new tone for the whole show and gave hope to players who thought they’d never see even $2,000 let alone the big prize of 100 grand with Derek in the mix.

Blair Duggan, the course superintendent joined us on the 6th hole, so our foursome was now complete.

He shared with me what he does every fall to prepare the greens for the winter. It’s quite amazing really – he wraps those puppies up better than I do my fine crystal when I’m moving house.

He then proceeded to hand me a souvenir from Mill River – guess what it was….yup, a ball mark repair tool ☺

The 6th hole is 502 yard straightaway par 5 and hosted the team challenge in Episode 7 where Gerina and Blair teed off in Final Immunity from the top of the hill. You might not remember Gerina hooking her 3 wood it into the ditch, but I’m sure she does.

The Signature 7th Hole Is Both The Favourite Of Canadian Contestant Derek Gillespie And Your Agent
The 7th hole is one of the few that hasn’t been used on Big Break PEI yet, and when I saw it, I was really surprised.

This signature hole is gorgeous, with a creek running through the middle of the fairway with 4 waterfalls running like locks inside a canal.

When I asked Derek Gillespie to pick his favorite hole on the course, he named this one – I had to agree.

There’s no hitting down the middle on this hole.

The green is very elevated and tough to reach on your second shot if you take the safe route off the tee and aim right – note to Gayle - take 2 extra clubs next time.

But left has its own set of problems with lots of trees and awkward lies even if you do hit the grass.  I stuck to the right.

A piece of interesting trivia…

In 1992, the Philadelphia Flyers were holding their training camp at Rodd Mill River Resort and Eric Lindros drove the green on this hole in bare feet – that’s 358 yards with no shoes! Wow!

The 9th Hole At Rodd Mill River Has Seen Quite A Bit Of Action According To Roving Reporter Gayle Moss
The 9th hole has seen quite a bit of action on Big Break PEI.

It is a pretty flat straightforward par 4, until you get to the green which has enough undulations to challenge even the best putters.

It hosted the glass breaking relay race, the wall challenge and the 4-location elimination challenge in Episode 4 where Caroline was knocked out by that bunker shot in that sudden death playoff against Eugene and Gerina.

It was also the hole where Stina and Charlie were almost hit by Aaron’s wayward shot (or at least staged to look that way).

In Episode 9, it was one of the two holes used to determine who went to elimination in matchups between Brenda and Gerina, and Derek and Blair.

Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion of Gayle's PEI adventure in next Monday's newsletter which happens to be on the same day as the conclusion of Big Break PEI on the Golf Channel.
